Over the past three years I have had the pleasure of coaching many clients towards their unique and individual goals. The discussions had about what it takes to reach a goal have varied but there has always been one underlying theme that must be embraced if one is to transcend what they currently believe is possible…it will take hard work and without question will prove to be a struggle. It is the act of embracing the hard work and the struggle that allows one to evolve.

One quote in particular captures the importance of this concept…I wish I could say that I am well read and could take credit for finding this quote but the truth is it was shared with me by the enigmatic Jim Romig. Here is the quote:

“Let me give you the philosophy of reforms. The whole history of the progress of human liberty shows that all concessions yet made to her august claims have been born of struggle… If there is no struggle there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom and yet depreciate aggitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. The struggle may be a moral one; or it may be a physical one; or it may be moral and physical , but it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and never will…”

-Frederick Douglass

This quote speaks to me on such a deep level that I had no choice but to share it along with some information on the source. To find inspiration in the story of Frederick Douglass would serve each of us well in our attempt to reach our true potential…here is a little of what Wikipedia has to say about him:

Frederick Douglass (born Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey, February 1818 – February 20, 1895) was an American social reformer, orator, writer and statesman. After escaping from slavery, he became a leader of the abolitionist movement, gaining renown for his dazzling oratory and incisive antislavery writing. He stood as a living counter-example to slaveholders’ arguments that slaves did not have the intellectual capacity to function as independent American citizens. He became a major speaker for the cause of abolition.

In addition to his oratory, Douglass wrote several autobiographies, eloquently describing his life as a slave, and his struggles to be free. His classic autobiography, Life and Times of Frederick Douglass, is one of the best known accounts of American slavery.

After the Civil War, Douglass remained very active in America’s struggle to reach its potential as a “land of the free”. Douglass actively supported women’s suffrage. Following the war, he worked on behalf of equal rights for freedmen, and held multiple public offices.

Douglass was a firm believer in the equality of all people, whether black, female, Native American, or recent immigrant. He was fond of saying, “I would unite with anybody to do right and with nobody to do wrong.” [2]

Easily one of the most versatile pieces of fitness equipment you can invest in are a pair of gymnastic rings. Gymnastic rings are lightweight, portable and can serve to make exercises either easier or much harder. Taking this all into account along with the fact that ring training is FUN leads me to advise most people to invest in a set of gymnastic rings before many conventional pieces of equipment like weights.

Even though gymnastic rings are a very versatile piece of equipment that anyone can use eventually many of us tend to want to explore exercises like those that we see olympic athletes perform. Though many fitness enthusiasts use the muscle up as a benchmark for strength not realizing that there are so many more fun and effective drills that can be left untapped if we stop there. I mean who hasn’t thought of doing an “Iron Cross” before?

Though grabbing a pair of rings and immediately trying a high level strength skill like an iron cross may be unwise for most of us wouldn’t it be great to have someone with a ton of experience be able to help you build up to skills such as this and others in a safe progressive manner?

How about doing this while integrating specific joint mobility warm ups and post work compensatory movements to prevent injury and maximize the strength building results of your work?

That is exactly what this three hour ring workshop will offer! Taught by Circular Strength Training (CST) Faculty Coach Ryan Hurst and CST Head Coach Jarlo Llano for the first time here in Salinas, CA.

What is the largest organ of the human body?

The skin is the largest organ of the human body. The average adult having approximately 3000 square inches of skin weighing somewhere around 6 pounds. This is nearly twice the weight of the brain or the liver. Another fun fact: substances that come into contact with the skin are absorbed through the porous material. In fact this transdermal delivery is fast becoming the preferred way to deliver a variety of drugs into the system such as nicotine or even birth control hormones.

What is your skin absorbing through your use of common skin care products?

Most commercially available skin care products contain animal and petroleum byproducts. I don’t know about you but I really don’t want to be absorbing these things through my skin. I personally have made an attempt to reduce my use of plastics to prevent my exposure to various chemicals they contain and though I have no problem with ingesting animals I really don’t want to be rubbing their fats all over my body. Evidence shows that various chemicals that are absorbed through the skin build up in our body on a cellular level and can be contributing causes of cancer and other health concerns.

Read the following article excerpt from the Denver Post:

Sunscreens are regulated by the FDA, which allows only 17 active ingredients. Two of these are minerals — titanium dioxide and zinc oxide — which work by reflecting and scattering the sun’s rays away from your body. The rest are chemicals, which absorb the sun’s rays and keep them from causing damage.

According to the Environmental Working Group, not all these chemicals are created equal. The group analyzed nearly 400 studies and 60 government, academic and industry databases before issuing its report on sunscreens last summer. It found numerous studies showing that the most common sunscreen chemical, octinoxate, can act like estrogen in the body, increasing the risk of breast cancer and uterine damage.

But octinoxate is not as bad as oxybenzone, the second-most common sunscreen chemical, or PABA or its derivative, padimate O. Both of these ingredients may damage cells, disrupt hormones and cause allergic reactions, according to a variety of studies.

It seems to me that the dangers of using these chemically based sunscreen products may very well outweigh the comfort they provide as protection from the sun. Looking for solutions to this problem I found Amanda Bakker of Arbonne International and convinced her to share a little bit about their organic botanically based skin care products.
